Low Vitamin D Level

Postby Gucci on Sat Jul 24, 2010 5:54 pm

I just found out after having pre-op blood work that my Vit D level is really low. My PCP called and said it was 19.8. I googled it and I have almost all of the symptoms you can have with a low level. I have vitiligo so I NEVER get out in the sun so it makes sense. One of the symptoms is obesity!! So, why dont doctors check Vitamin D levels when you are overweight, tired all the time, have pcos, high b/p, diabetes and depression?? And yes, I have been taking vitamins with vitamin D!!!! Maybe this is why I have felt like crap for years!!! I see Dr. Sonnanstine for the 1st time on 7/27, then surgery on 8/13. Will he give me a rx for a high dose of Vit D? Has anyone out there had a low level? Wonder if I will feel a lot better if I can get my level back up to normal? I just can't get over the fact that I have seen a ton of doctors and they ALL know I have vitiligo and cant get in the sun and NO ONE has ever said, "you do take vit. D dont you?" I was at a dermatologists office a couple of weeks ago and nope it was never mentioned. CRAZY!!!

We find that many people are deficient in Vitamin D (low levels). One of the new requirements for all of Dr. Sonnanstines patients is 5,000 IU of Vitamin D every day.
If you are taking a prescription dose check with your prescribing physician before starting an additional amount as high levels in your body can be dangerous.

Hey Crystal,
I may not be getting enough vitamin D. Just being a transfer patient to Dr.Sonnastine. Do I need to mention this to him when I go back to see him in Aug? I do 2 calcium chews they have D & K. The bag says Vitamin D3 1000 I.U so times that by two. Then The Centrum Chewable Vitamins only has Vitamin D 400 I.U. so if our required dose of D is 5000,I'm not quite getting half. Let me know if I need to mention this to him. Thanks,Mitzi

Dr. Tom is recomending the 5000 IU of Vitamin D on top of what you are getting in your calcium chews and multivitamin. Give him a call and he or Steve will let you know what you need to take. You may want to have your lab work faxed to them as well.

MY PCP was shocked when he did a vitamin D level on me and it was normal. He said I was one of few he had ever seen normal in his 30 plus years of practicing. Apparently most people are low in the US.

Fortunately, when my PCP checks, my levels always been normal, too. Just plain lucky, I guess...
